Motorists in Singapore are feeling the strain on their wallets heading into the weekend, with Caltex and Esso matching Shell's Oct 29 increase on Friday (Oct 30).

In a price board update published at 11am, Chevron-owned Caltex announced that it has raised prices for its 92-, 95-octane and premium petrol offerings by three cents each, while keeping its diesel price unchanged.

The 3-cent per litre hike was mirrored by Esso later the same afternoon.

Caltex last increased its petrol prices by three cents on Oct 21, while Esso did so on Oct 22.

This follows its last round of price increments posted on Oct 21, also by 3 cents per litre.

In recent weeks, Shell and Caltex have taken turns to hike petrol prices, with Esso and Sinopec usually the next to raise prices, and lastly, SPC.

But SPC did not raise prices last week, despite the four other major fuel companies doing so.

Following the latest round of price increments, the price of the more popular 95-octane petrol at the five major fuel companies now ranges from $3.56 at SPC to $3.63 at Caltex and Shell.

As compared to their rates before Sept 14, when prices rose again after more than two months, both Caltex's and Esso's 95-octane petrol have now risen by 26 cents.

Meanwhile, Cnergy and Smart Energy have held their price for the petrol grade at $2.69 and $2.62 respectively.

Oil prices rose on Friday — set for a fourth monthly gain — as an attack on ‌a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday highlighted the continuing supply risks from the US-Israeli war on Iran, which has entered its eighth month.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack.

Brent crude futures for December, which expires on Friday, advanced US$1.20, or 1.04 per cent, to US$116.08 a barrel as at 11.25am (Singapore time).

The more-active January contract gained US$1.39 to US$112.19.

"Continued kinetic action around the Strait of Hormuz amidst doubts of a viable diplomatic pathway are keeping oil prices elevated in expectation of an escalation of the conflict in coming weeks," said Saul Kavonic, head of energy research at MST Marquee.

On Thursday, the Houthis said they had attacked several sites in Saudi Arabia, including its largest oil refinery, Ras Tanura, the Rabigh refinery and a production facility in Abqaiq owned by state company Saudi Aramco, while a Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted a cruise missile launched by the Houthis towards the kingdom's western region.
