A woman was filmed arguing with a male youth on an MRT train over allegations that he had refused to give up his seat.

The Instagram video, posted by xmmsnxdds on Wednesday (Nov 4), shows the woman scolding the youth as she sits next to him on the priority seat.

The pair can be seen quarrelling on the train towards Clementi on the East-West Line, although it is unclear when the incident happened.

While both are already seated when the video begins, they seem to be in the midst of a heated dispute over the woman's age.

"Mine is a senior card, what are you talking about?" the woman says, pulling a Senior Citizen Concession Card, which is issued to Singapore citizens aged 60 and above, from her bag and waving it in front of the youth's face. "See!"

Though his words are indistinct, the youth appears to question her age, prompting an agitated response.

"Why do I need to tell you my age, idiot?" she questions indignantly, before telling him to "check the website" and repeatedly urging him to "shut up" as he persistently responds.

The woman tells him how he is "irritating" her and rejects the youth's attempt to apologise.

"Your apology is not accepted," she replies, closing her eyes and raising a hand as if to signal for him to stop speaking.

'Don't talk to me anymore'

The youth can be heard saying "Alright, I'm sorry," before turning to his friend in front of him to apparently complain about the Chinese woman.

The video then ends with the youth continuing to speak to his friend indistinctly.

The Instagram caption labels the youth as a "master of rage baiting", suggesting he had deliberately sought to provoke the woman.

Despite their heated exchange, both remained seated next to each other throughout the video.

Netizens criticise the exchange

The viral video has amassed over 617,000 views on Instagram, with more than 8,000 likes, almost 8,000 shares and close to 300 comments.

Many netizens criticised the behaviour of both parties, calling the woman "entitled" and youth "rude".

One comment, with over 1,000 likes, commended the youth for "not letting [the woman] off so easy", highlighting how some elderly folks behaved in an "entitled" manner on public transport.

"That boy will sure drive any parents mad," commented another.

A netizen joked about how noisy the exchange was: "The reason why I always wear my Airpods."
