Woman falls after allegedly riding escalator with shopping trolley at Yishun mall

An elderly woman was taken to hospital after she fell while riding an escalator at a shopping mall in Yishun on Wednesday (Aug 19).

In a video posted to Facebook, the woman can be seen lying on her side on the steps of the stationary escalator as several SCDF personnel attended to her.

A shopping trolley can also be seen near the escalator. 

The incident took place on the escalator connecting the first and second floors of Junction Nine, Lianhe Zaobao reported. 

The woman is believed to have fallen while riding the escalator with the shopping trolley.

Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a call for assistance at 18 Yishun Avenue 9 at about 4.45pm. 

The woman was subsequently taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

Escalator safety

In a safety advisory in 2024, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) reminded the public to observe basic escalator safety measures, including holding the handrail and standing within the yellow lines on escalator steps.

The authority also advised against bringing bulky items such as strollers onto escalators, and urged users to take the lift instead.

In 2023, BCA said that 97 per cent of escalator incidents reported that year were linked to improper use.

The top cause was users carrying bulky items including prams, luggage and shopping trolleys, which accounted for 17 per cent of the 632 cases from January to October.

Less than three per cent were caused by mechanical faults such as the handrail stopping while the escalator was in operation.
