National carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) and its subsidiary Scoot on Thursday (Oct 22) announced cancellations on flight services operating to and from Taipei, Tokyo and Incheon due to weather conditions caused by Typhoon Champi.

At least 16 flights scheduled between Oct 23 and 24 have been cancelled:

  • SQ876, SQ877, SQ878 and SQ879 between Singapore and Taipei on Oct 23
  • TR866, TR867, TR874, and TR872 between Singapore and Taipei on Oct 23
  • TR866, TR867, TR874, and TR875 between Taipei and Tokyo's Narita on Oct 23
  • TR872 and TR873 between Taipei and Seoul's Incheon on Oct 23
  • TR875 and TR873 between Taipei and Singapore on Oct 24

Both SIA and Scoot said they are contacting all affected customers to inform them about the changes to the flight schedules.

Their affected customers may either rebook their flights or request for a full refund of the unused portion of their ticket if they choose not to continue with their travel.

Those who made their bookings through travel agents or partner airlines are advised to contact their travel agent or purchasing airline directly for assistance.

Both Singapore Airlines and Scoot have also advised customers to visit their flight status page for the latest information, as the situation remains fluid and additional flights could be affected.

So far, more than 200 flight cancellations have been recorded in the region.

Flights cancelled in Japan

At one point a super typhoon and one of the strongest storms in the Pacific this year, Typhoon Champi weakened slightly on Thursday but was still packing gusts of more than 227 kmh near its centre, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA).

Coastal towns received mobile phone alerts warning of waves exceeding six metres, while nearly a metre (3 feet) of rain was forecast in northern mountain areas, including the hills near Taipei.

The typhoon is also forecast to pass over Japan's westernmost inhabited island, Yonaguni, in Okinawa Prefecture.

In Japan, major carriers Japan Airlines, ANA and Skymark have cancelled more than 100 flights, mostly domestic, between Thursday and Sunday, disrupting travel for over 11,000 passengers.
