The stewards and stewardesses of Singapore Airlines (SIA) have put together a performance for all Singaporeans in a video shared on SIA's Instagram page on Friday (Aug 9) — our country's 61st birthday.
The video begins with a flight steward, Kelvin, playing a violin, while stewardess Lei Hoi plays a guzheng.
Leading steward Jasper, dressed in a short-sleeved batik shirt, then eases into the first song of the performance: Semoga Bahagia, composed by Zubir Said.
Zubir Said also composed Singapore's national anthem, Majulah Singapura.
The music then shifts into a familiar, upbeat tune, as stewardesses Michelle and Michele, as well as chief stewardess Natasha, dance to the beat of Munnaeru Vaalibaa.
Fauzaan, also a leading steward, takes the Tamil song in stride with a powerful voice, singing with energy while donning a songkok and long-sleeved batik shirt.
Following his performance, stewardess Aura, dressed in a nyonya kebaya, takes charge as she begins singing "Xiao Ren Wu De Xin Sheng", also known as "The Voice of the Ordinary People" (transliteration), a famous Xinyao classic.
Flight stewardess Catherine — also dressed in a nyonya kebaya — joins in, continuing the song as Aura ends her segment of the performance.
All singers who participated thus far then jump straight into the chorus of Singapura, Sunny Island, another well-known National Day song, as their performance reaches a climax.
The group then returns to the song that they began with, Semoga Bahagia, this time dressed in SIA's iconic batik sarong kebaya for the ladies and formal wear for men.
Singaporeans around the world can then be seen in short video snippets, sharing their well-wishes for Singapore on the nation's birthday as the video ends.
"Happy 61st birthday, Singapore," SIA wrote in their Instagram post.
"Four languages. One heart. Performed by Singapore Airlines Cabin Crew, this is our tribute to the island we proudly call home.
"To every Singaporean, at home or around the world, we hope this performance fills you with the same love and pride we feel for Singapore."
