Security officer allegedly punched by driver while on duty, police report lodged

A police report has been lodged after a security officer on traffic duty was allegedly struck by a vehicle and later assaulted by the driver.

The incident occurred on Aug 13, according to a Facebook post by the Union of Security Employees (USE), an affiliate of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).

The security officer involved, Muhd Faiz Bin Mohd of Peregrine Security, had been carrying out his traffic control duties in the northern part of Singapore at the time. 

While directing traffic, Faiz was allegedly struck by a vehicle's side mirror after a motorist failed to comply with his instructions.

The driver subsequently exited the vehicle and allegedly punched Faiz in the face, causing injuries to his cheek and jaw, said USE.

Police report lodged

A police report was subsequently lodged against the driver and investigations are ongoing.

"No security officer should face abuse, threats, or violence while performing lawful duties to keep our workplaces and communities safe," said USE, adding that it is "deeply concerned" by the incident.

To support Faiz, USE worked with their management partners to ensure that his medical expenses were taken care of and his wages were not disrupted during his medical leave.

The union reminded members of the public that it is an offence to voluntarily cause hurt to a security officer in the course of duty.

If convicted, an offender will face a fine of up to $10,000, a maximum jail term of 5 years, or both.

USE also advised all security officers to promptly take action and file a police report in event of any physical abuse or assault while on duty.
