But a 59-year-old man, who is allegedly involved in a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit on Choa Chu Kang Avenue 5 on the night of Aug 31, did something different.
He purportedly scattered shoes — placed on the victim's shoe rack outside the unit — across the floor, and allegedly left a bicycle lock on the shoe rack.
Officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the man through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras.
He was arrested him the next day (Sept 1), and preliminary investigations have revealed that he could allegedly be involved in other cases of loanshark harassment.
He will be charged in court on Thursday under the Moneylenders Act.
If found guilty of loanshark harassment, he could face up to five years in jail, be fined up to $50,000, and receive up to six strokes of the cane.
The police warned would-be perpetrators that they have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities, adding that those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
They also advised members of the public to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way.
