PM Wong expresses condolences following Nepal-China floods

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has expressed his condolences to those affected by the flash floods along the Nepal-China border.

In a Facebook post on Thursday (Aug 27), he wrote. "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and devastation caused by the floods along the Nepal-China border.

"My deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and to all those affected by this tragedy."

He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in close touch with the respective Nepali and Chinese authorities to render consular assistance to affected Singaporeans and is also in touch with their next-of-kin.

PM Wong added: "Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and China during this difficult time, and with the authorities and emergency personnel working tirelessly on rescue and recovery efforts. 

"We hope for the safe return of those still missing."

A large wall of mud and rock collapsed into a river on the Himalayan border of Nepal and China's Tibet on Wednesday, resulting in a flood that has killed many and left hundreds missing, Reuters reported.

Two Singaporeans travelling with a tour group have also been reported missing, according to AFP.

As at Wednesday evening, 157 bodies have been recovered, Nepal police said.

Vivian extends condolences

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan also expressed his condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the flash floods.

"Singapore stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and China during this difficult time," he said.

While the Government is putting together a humanitarian assistance package to support relief efforts in Nepal, MFA is also working with local authorities to provide aid to affected Singaporeans.

The Singapore High Commission in New Delhi is deploying a Consular Response Team to Nepal to provide further assistance on the ground, he added.

Addressing affected Singaporeans, he further advised that they stay safe and remain vigilant.

"Keep a close watch on local developments and follow the advice of the local authorities," Minister Balakrishnan said.

"Please also eRegister with MFA so that we can keep you updated and reach you if necessary."
