NDR 2026: Singaporean children to receive up to $62,000 under new support package

Every Singaporean child will receive up to $62,000 in direct support under a new SG Child Support Package, bringing the total amount to around $70,000 with existing benefits.

Speaking at the National Day Rally 2026 held at the Institute of Technical Education College Central in Ang Mo Kio on Sunday (Aug 23), Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the package aims to provide families with stronger and more sustained support from a child's birth through their growing years.

The new package will replace the existing Baby Bonus Scheme and Large Families Scheme, with every Singapore citizen child receiving the same level of support regardless of birth order.

This includes a $10,000 baby gift in cash, which will be paid in two tranches within 12 months of the child's birth.

Children will also receive $32,000 in child credits in cash, through $2,000 annual payments from the year they turn one until the year they turn 16.

The package will also include a $5,000 Child Development Account (CDA) First Step Grant and up to $5,000 in the government co-matching the child's CDA. 

The CDA will also be extended to the end of the year the child turns 16, instead of the present 12 years.

In addition, each child will receive a $10,000 top-up to their Post-Secondary Education Account when they turn 17.

Together with existing benefits, including the $5,000 MediSave grant for newborns and annual Edusave contributions of around $2,500, each Singapore citizen child will receive around $70,000 in direct financial support from birth to age 17.

The changes come after the previous major enhancements to support families were announced on Feb 18, 2025. 

The SG Child Support Package is expected to take effect from April 2027, with around 640,000 children across 380,000 resident households expected to benefit, said the National Population and Talent Division of the Prime Minister's Office.

More affordable preschool, primary school years 

On top of the subsidies, PM Wong highlighted that the Government will also progressively reduce fees at government-supported preschools, with full-day childcare fees targeted to reach $150 a month and infant care fees $300 a month by 2030.

"The early years in a child's life matter greatly. They shape how children learn, grow and thrive," said PM Wong. 

He added that full childcare and infant care subsidies will also be extended to families with Singaporean children, regardless of whether the parent applying for the subsidy is working. 

"Today Singaporeans enjoy affordable primary education – regardless of household income, and regardless of whether both parents are working," he said. 

"Likewise, we want every Singaporean child to have access to quality preschool at fees that families can comfortably afford."

Additionally, the Government will also further expand its network of supported preschool operators, giving families more options for affordable and quality preschool places closer to home. 

Preschool fee reductions are expected to be rolled out progressively from 2028, with the target fee levels expected to be reached by 2030.
