Two MRT station staff went above and beyond their call of duty to help a cyclist after he suffered a head injury in an accident near an MRT station. They even paid for a private-hire ride to send him home.

The cyclist, a 53-year-old who reportedly cycles about 30km daily from Yishun to Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre, was outside Labrador Park MRT station when the incident occurred.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the station's assistant manager, who wished to be known only as Taufik, said a woman approached the passenger service counter at about 8am on Oct 5 seeking assistance.

She informed Taufik, 32, that a man near the MRT escalator was bleeding from his forehead.

Upon seeing the cyclist's injuries, Taufik immediately alerted station manager Luqmannulhakim, 37, who brought a first-aid kit and helped bandage the man's head wound to stop the bleeding.

The cyclist had sustained a 5cm gash on his forehead.

Cyclist's brother offers to reimburse staff

After bandaging the man's wound, Taufik and Luqmannulhakim offered to call an ambulance for him, but he repeatedly declined their offer, saying that he wanted to return home to put away his bicycle first.

Luqmannulhakim eventually arranged a private-hire car to take him home and, together with Taufik, escorted him to the pick-up point.

While waiting for the vehicle, the two staff members continued talking to the cyclist to ensure that he remained alert.

The following day, the man's 55-year-old older brother, who wished to be known only as Hu, visited the station to thank the staff for their assistance.

Hu also brought snacks for the station staff, took a photograph with them and offered to reimburse the $27 fare for the private-hire ride, but Luqmannulhakim declined.

"It is our job as a frontliner, so if anybody who needs help we still help out. Money can be earned again, but his brother's life is more important," said Luqmannulhakim.
