Man dies after Lorong Lew Lian flat fire; MP Seah Kian Peng says 'he will be missed'

A 68-year-old man died after a fire broke out at Block 8 Lorong Lew Lian in Serangoon on Tuesday (Sept 1) afternoon.

AsiaOne had earlier reported that the victim was among four persons taken to the Singapore General Hospital.

He was found unconscious in the third-floor unit and brought out by firefighters, who then commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in an earlier statement posted on its Facebook.

Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng, who is also MP for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, took to Facebook to share an update on the incident.

He said that he was on his way to attend a wake when he was alerted to the fire at Block 8 Lorong Lew Lian — located in the oldest precinct of his Braddell Heights ward.

"Very unfortunate and sad that the occupant did not survive the fire. I have known him for many years now and in fact, last saw him not so long ago. 

"As he has been a resident here for many years and is by nature a friendly person, he will be missed," the fifth-term MP wrote in his post.

Seah thanked SCDF for its fast response, and residents who had come together to helped those affected by the fire.

He also said that work is being done to help those affected and inconvenienced by the fire.

What happened

The SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 2.45pm.

The blaze, which involved the contents of a unit's living room, was put out using a water jet.

Along with the deceased, three other people — aged between 51 and 94 — were also taken to the hospital for breathlessness or smoke inhalation. 

About 30 people were evacuated from the affected block by police and SCDF officers as a safety precaution.

Police told AsiaOne that they do not suspect any foul play based on preliminary investigations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
