Geylang pasar malam crash: Man charged over alleged etomidate-impaired driving that killed stall attendant

A man who allegedly drove a rental car into a Geylang night market stall while under the influence of etomidate, killing a 67-year-old woman, was charged in court on Wednesday (Sept 2).

Muhammad Shafiq Razali, 41, faces seven charges over the fatal incident on July 11, 2025.

They include driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving causing death as a serious offender, driving without a valid licence, and dangerous driving as a serious offender. 

He was also charged with using a vehicle without insurance coverage, failing to stop and provide his particulars after an accident, and failing to render assistance after an accident.

According to the Straits Times, Shafiq appeared in court on Wednesday and asked for an adjournment as he wanted to engage a lawyer.

The prosecution sought bail of $100,000, citing its intention to seek between 15 and 16 years' jail and a driving disqualification period of between 20 and 23 years if he claims trial.

Shafiq appeared shocked at the bail amount, The Straits Times reported.

As his bailor was unable to afford the amount, he was remanded and is expected to return to court on Oct 9.

Driver allegedly lost control

According to the charge sheets cited by The Straits Times, Shafiq allegedly lost control of the car and pressed the accelerator excessively, causing the vehicle to surge forward and crash through a car park barrier.

The car then crossed Pipit Road near Block 52A Circuit Road before mounting a kerb and crashing into a temporary night market stall.

A 67-year-old female stall attendant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shafiq allegedly did not render assistance to the woman and instead fled the scene with his male passenger.

Prior to the crash, he allegedly drove dangerously along several roads, including weaving between lanes along Circuit Road towards Merpati Road and along Aljunied Road towards MacPherson Road.

He also allegedly sped along Merpati Road.

Shafiq was also allegedly driving without a valid licence, while the rental vehicle had been rented by his male passenger.

The driver was arrested the following day.
