Fire breaks out in Balestier apartment bedroom, over 70 evacuated

Firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out at an apartment in Balestier on Tuesday (Aug 25) night.

Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at 2 Ava Road at about 9.15pm.

A check on Google Maps shows the address as that of Victory Point.

SCDF added that upon arrival, firefighters found the bedroom of a fourth-floor unit on fire. The fire was subsequently extinguished using one water jet.

There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The unit, which served as living quarters for employees of Tian San Shipping, also prompted more than 70 people to be evacuated, reported Lianhe Zaobao.

In a video shared with the Chinese daily, flames can be seen coming out of a bedroom window, with thick smoke billowing from the apartment.

Several SCDF vehicles were also seen at the scene, while the area was cordoned off. 

Residents of the unit can also be seen lining up outside while the fire was being brought under control, before re-entering the building.
