906 diesel buses set to undergo mid-life refurbishment from first quarter 2027: LTA

PUBLISHED ONOctober 20, 2026 1:30 AMBYSean LerA total of 906 diesel buses will undergo refurbishments after spending about 10 years on the road.
That will help to fix wear and tear and keep the buses running safely and reliably, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a statement on Monday (Oct 19).
According to LTA, the works will involve 353 single-deck buses — 100 MAN A22 and 252 Mercedes-Benz Citaro 0530 buses; 553 double-deck buses — 63 MAN A95 and 490 Volvo B9TL buses.
Passenger and driver seats; floor coverings; door system components; sealants of windows and windscreen; step and staircase trims; and, battery cable and mastery relay will either be refreshed or replaced.
The refurbishment contract was awarded to Wah Sheng Motor Supply and will begin in the first quarter of 2027, continuing through till 2030.
"These upgrades will help keep our buses in good condition, ensuring safer, more reliable and comfortable journeys for commuters and a more comfortable working environment for our bus captains," LTA said.
In Singapore, public buses have a statutory lifespan of 17 years, but can, under special conditions and safety assessments, receive incremental one-to-two year extensions, till a maximum of 20 years.
Under Singapore's bus contracting model, buses are owned by the Government, and LTA appoints contractors to carry out such refurbishments.
The first such tender was called in June 2023 and entailed the refurbishment of 629 diesel buses between 2023 and 2025.
