DBS, Southeast Asia's and Singapore's biggest lender by assets, on Friday (Oct 23) announced a $1 million commitment to haze relief measures for vulnerable seniors and migrant workers.

The lender said in a news release that the project is expected to benefit 275,000 individuals through essential support, including N95 masks and air purifiers to reduce exposure amid worsening air quality.

It will work with DBS People of Purpose volunteers to distribute 50,000 masks and 100 air purifiers to DBS Foundation-supported social service agencies that serve vulnerable seniors, including Allkin Singapore, Lions Befrienders and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities.

Each eligible beneficiary will receive two haze masks.

DBS said it will also work with these partners to provide air purifiers to 500 homebound seniors who live alone and are unable to seek respite elsewhere.

Meanwhile, recognising that many migrant workers work outdoors, DBS will be donating 500,000 N95 masks to migrant workers.

The bank, and the Ministry of Manpower, will work with dormitory operators to distribute masks to their residents at several worker dormitories, and seven migrant worker recreation centres from 12pm on Oct 25 — on a first-come-first served basis.

DBS Singapore's country head Lim Him Chuan noted that some members of the community may be harder hit than others, citing the example of outdoor workers who may have little choice but to remain exposed, while seniors may find it difficult to get to spaces with cleaner air.

"As a bank that stands committed to doing right by our customers and society-at-large, DBS is bringing together our people, partners and resources to address these needs and help these communities to stay safe and supported.”

He added that DBS will continue to monitor conditions and work with partners to adapt its support as community needs evolve.
