Chinese duo to be charged over counterfeit Singapore currency found at MBS

Two Chinese nationals will be charged on Wednesday (Aug 26) for their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to counterfeit Singapore currency notes.

The two suspects involved are a 33-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman.

In a press release, the police said that they received a report at around 3.50am on Monday that a man had attempted to exchange a counterfeit $100 note at Marina Bay Sands Casino.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the man had handed over $150,000 to the cage cashier, and requested for the money to be deposited into his casino account.

The cage cashier discovered the counterfeit $100 Portrait Series note with the word "copy" printed on it while counting the cash, and subsequently made a police report.

The man was later escorted to his hotel room by police officers, where they noticed the woman leaving with a printer.

A search of the room yielded counterfeiting instruments including a bottled ink, paper, and a paper cutter.

Police also found that the woman had 121 counterfeit $100 notes. 

The duo will be charged in court with the offence of of engaging in a conspiracy to counterfeit Singapore Currency notes, and will face a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine if convicted.

The police also reminded members of the public who receive any suspected counterfeit currency note to make a police report and limit handling of the suspected counterfeit note to prevent further tampering before handing it over to the police.
