$100,870 for a 5-minute parking stop at River Valley? Gantry glitch logs driver as parked for nearly 20 years

PUBLISHED ONSeptember 25, 2026 4:12 AMUPDATEDSeptember 30, 2026 1:51 AMBYKhoo Yi-HangA driver who parked for just five minutes in River Valley was reportedly hit with a parking charge of more than $100,000 due to an apparent gantry glitch.
Reddit user Templar817 shared a photo on Friday (Sept 25) showing a staggering bill of $100,870, after the system allegedly recorded the vehicle as having been parked for 7,204 days, 22 hours and 51 minutes, or nearly 20 years.
"Accidentally parked for 20 years," the user jokingly titled the post, adding that he had in reality stopped for just five minutes and was still within the grace period.
He proceeded to call the hotline for Times Parking, the company managing the gantry, and was informed that the system had failed to detect his vehicle entering despite the barrier opening.
"Luckily it didn't debit my CashCard," Templar817 added.
In the comments, netizens responded to the user's experience with humour, with one joking about the duration of his parking: "Extended COE (certificate of entitlement) to secure that one spot next to the lifts. Nice!"
Another user referenced the time-travelling plot of the movie Back to the Future, questioning: "Did you park a DeLorean by any chance?"
A user also advised, tongue-in-cheek: "Tell them (Times Parking) your card actually got deducted and ask for refund."
Other netizens, however, were curious about the significance of the duration cited by the gantry system.
One speculated that it could correspond to the date the system was commissioned.
"The cashcard EPS (electronic parking system) was launched in 2004," the user wrote.
Responding to queries from AsiaOne, Times Parking shared that they are aware of the incident and regret the inconvenience caused.
"Upon being alerted, our team promptly attended to the site, replaced the affected component and resolved the issue," Times Parking stated.
