Sunway Theme Parks has confirmed a roller coaster incident that left 10 guests injured at Sunway Lagoon in Subang Jaya, The Star reported on Tuesday (Aug 25).

The incident, which took place last Saturday (Aug 22) at around 9pm, involved 22 riders comprising locals and foreign tourists — but it remains unclear what exactly happened.

Sunway Theme Parks expressed deep regret over the incident, and said that its thoughts are with the guests and their families, The New Straits Times reported.

"Since the incident, the company has provided necessary medical assistance and support, and remains in close contact with the guests and their families.

"Sunway Theme Parks is working closely and fully cooperating with relevant authorities while conducting an investigation on the incident," the theme park operator said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sunway Group founder Jeffrey Cheah commented that "we are lucky that there were no fatalities", adding that ,"in my view, the incident may be attributable to metal fatigue."

No foul play is suspected, he said, citing police findings.

Cheah also revealed that the roller coaster was closed for inspection and maintenance about two to three weeks before the incident, The New Straits Times reported.

The 10 guests sustained minor injuries.
