Subang Jaya roller coaster incident leaves 10 hurt, police investigating

Ten people were injured after a roller coaster incident at a theme park in Subang Jaya on Saturday (August 22) night, according to the New Straits Times (NST) on Monday.

The incident occurred at around 9pm and involved 22 riders, comprising locals and foreign tourists aged between 11 and 44, according to the Malay Mail.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said 10 riders suffered injuries and were taken to medical centres in the Subang Jaya district for treatment.

Wan Azlan also advised the public not to speculate about the incident, saying that speculation could hamper the investigation.

All the riders suffered minor injuries, reported NST.

According to the Malay Mail, police received the report at 11.45am the following day and are investigating the incident.

While police and local media reports did not name the theme park, online chatter has largely pointed to Sunway Lagoon, which is located in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya.

Social media posts suggested that people were carried out on stretchers, but details of exactly how the incident unfolded remain unclear. 

One social media post alleged that the roller coaster had "skidded", although authorities have not publicly confirmed the cause.

In another social media post, a woman said she received a call from her husband telling her that he was stuck on the ride, and that some riders were injured. 

She said she tried not to panic while waiting below, as the evacuation appeared to be taking some time to bring all the riders down.

Claims circulating on social media, including those regarding the identity of the theme park and how the incident unfolded, could not be independently verified by AsiaOne.
