In a bid to intimidate the son, the man, known only as Lee, claimed that the loan sharks sent him a screenshot of a fake obituary bearing his name on Oct 13, stating that his funeral would take place three days later.
The 31-year-old company director said his father, Lee Chee Wai, 70, repeatedly approached him and his sister for money over the past eight years, despite their efforts to help him financially, reported China Press.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (Oct 20), Lee revealed that they had lent their father approximately RM600,000 from 2019 to November 2025 to help him settle his debts.
They then decided to cut ties with him and draw up a formal agreement stating that they would take legal action if he approached them for money again.
"Even though our dad signed the agreement, it didn't stop him from continuing to borrow from loan sharks," Lee said, according to WeirdKaya.
On Sept 29, 2026, Lee said he and his sister began receiving messages from strangers claiming that their father had incurred another RM10,000 debt with loan sharks, reported China Press.
The siblings subsequently lodged three separate police reports over the matter.
But Lee alleged that the loan sharks found out about the reports and began threatening him just four hours after they were filed.
Having severed ties with their father, the siblings urged the loan sharks to stop harassing them and pursue their father, the alleged debtor, instead.
