A lorry transporting a load of tar overturned onto a car, killing a Malaysian couple.

Mohd Hardi Mohd Husin, 46, and his wife, Tengku Syafirana Tengku Abdullah, 44, died in the accident on Jalan Yong Peng-Muar, Johor, on Sunday (Nov 1), reported The Star.

Their children, an eight-year-old boy and an 11-year-old adopted girl, who were in the car, survived.

Yong Peng Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Mohamad Alif Halim said the lorry weighed 10 tonnes, and that firefighters had to extricate the couple with rescue equipment.

A burst tyre had caused the lorry to veer out of control, Batu Pahat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani reportedly said.

The children sustained cuts and burns on their legs as well as head injuries, according to the New Straits Times.

Their uncle, Muhamad Ihsan, said the children cried when he told them about their parents' death, reported Harian Metro.

They were wheeled by nurses to the hospital morgue to bid their parents a final goodbye.

"I love you, mummy and daddy," the girl reportedly said.

Ihsan, 30, reportedly added that he is prepared to raise the two children.

Bereaved family members told reporters that that the couple were returning home after buying groceries.

Shahrulanuar said the police are investigating the case for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
