Fuel prices in Malaysia rise for 2nd consecutive week amid 'persistently high' global oil prices

Announcing the adjusted petrol and diesel prices for the period of Aug 27 to Sept 2 on Wednesday night, the finance ministry said retail prices for unsubsidised Ron95, Ron97 and diesel will rise by 5 sen.
It attributed this to the "persistently highly" global crude oil prices last week, which climbed on concerns over the continued short supply from major oil producers such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
This follows US President Donald Trump's threat of economic sanctions on Iran's trading partners, raising fears of tighter supply in the coming weeks.
Malaysia uses the automatic pricing mechanism formula — introduced in 1983 to stabilise prices based on market fluctuations — when determining weekly petrol prices.
Following the latest round of pricing, the new prices for unsubsidised Ron95, Ron97, and diesel are RM3.82 (S$1.20), RM4.30 and RM4.72 per litre. respectively.

Noting that 290 million of the 400 million barrels of oil from the emergency supplies of International Energy Agency member countries have been released to the market as at July, the finance ministry said the depletion of this buffer supply increases the risk of price pressure — should disruptions continue.
"As long as petroleum flows through the Strait of Hormuz have not returned to normal and geopolitical uncertainties persist, petroleum product prices are expected to continue to fluctuate significantly in the near term," it said.
The ministry also reiterated its appeal for motorists to remain prudent in their fuel consumption and to continue reducing unnecessary travel.
