Malaysia is deploying its Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) to flood-hit Nepal to assist in ongoing search and rescue operations.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 30) that the SMART team will also help locate and repatriate Malaysians affected by the disaster.

He added that the team will also work with staff at the Malaysia Embassy in Kathmandu to ensure the safety and welfare of affected Malaysians.

Malaysia will also make a US$1 million (S$1.28 million) contribution to Nepal to support relief and post-disaster recovery efforts.

The deployment will be managed by the National Security Council and the National Disaster Management Agency, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the ministry, a total of 91 Malaysians, comprising 55 in Nepal and 36 in China's Tibet, are listed as uncontactable as of 8pm on Saturday.

More than 600 people in Nepal and Tibet have been killed after a glacier collapse on Wednesday unleashed a huge torrent of rock, ice, mud and debris through the Himalayan mountain river systems, with nearly 3,000 listed as still missing

@asiaone A 4.4 magnitude earthquake shortly before the landslide, but it remains unconfirmed if that was what caused the disaster. #nepal #disaster #flood #earthquake ♬ original sound - AsiaOne
