PUBLISHED ONSeptember 02, 2026 5:35 AMBYSean LerTwo areas in Sarawak again recorded "hazardous" Air Pollutant Index (API) readings on Wednesday (Sept 2) morning, data from the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) showed.
The system is managed by the Malaysia Department of Environment under its Environment Quality Monitoring Programme.
Checks by AsiaOne at 12pm indicate that Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak, recorded the country's highest API reading at 311, while the monitoring station at Serian police district headquarters had a reading of 305.
According to the department's advisory, those in areas which have a "hazardous" reading should avoid all outdoor activities.
The Sarawak Science Centre extended its temporary closure, which started on Aug 31, citing the ongoing haze and poor air quality conditions.
It cited concerns over long queue of visitors waiting outside who may potentially be exposed to the haze for extended periods as its reason for continued closure.
API readings at the "very unhealthy" level were also recorded at six locations in Sarawak: Samarahan (284), Sri Aman (226), Sarikei (267), Sibu (270), Mukah (221), and Bintulu (215).
Meanwhile, other locations in Sabah and Sarawak recorded "unhealthy" readings as at 12pm.
In Peninsular Malaysia, most areas remain in the "moderate" range, except for Seremban (110) and Nilai (145) in Negeri Sembilan, Putrajaya (151), and Johan Setia (161) in Selangor.
Data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre shows that 980 hotspots were recorded in Kalimantan on Sept 1, while Sumatra recorded 134 hotspots.
