JB-Singapore RTS Link now in testing and commissioning stage: Anthony Loke

The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) has entered the critical testing and commissioning phase, which precedes its being declared operational, said Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke. 

"This includes systems integration tests, final testing and trial runs, which are necessary before operations can begin," he said during a visit to the customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) complex at Bukit Chagar on Tuesday (Aug 18).

Loke noted that construction of the CIQ and RTS Link station have already been completed.

As part of his visit, the transport minister also rode the RTS Link during a test run. 

Fare and operational date being discussed

Loke also revealed that fare discussions and the actual date of starting operations are still being discussed, with details to be announced at a later date by the transport ministers of both countries.

"This is a bilateral project between Malaysia and Singapore — and the official announcement — in terms of the actual date of operation, will be announced together with my counterpart soon," he said.

During a visit in April, Loke had said that the RTS Links' operator, RTS Operations (RTSO) will be presenting the proposed fare rates to both governments before they are announced.

He added at that time that agreement is needed from both the Land Public Transport Agency of Malaysia and the Land Transport Authority of Singapore.

In February, Loke had suggested that fares could be priced around $5 to $7 per trip.

When asked whether a season pass would be introduced to provide a fixed fare for frequent cross-border travellers, Loke said this is an issue of commercial viability that has to be discussed with RTSO.

Once passenger service begins, the 4km shuttle from Woodlands North station to Bukit Chagar station in Johor Bahru will operate at a maximum speed of 80kmh and can accommodate up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
