The prime minister, who was away in China on a three-day working visit, said in a Facebook post that he was on his way back to Malaysia when he received news of his brother's passing.
Idrus was 83.
"It's hard for me to express this feeling of loss when a figure who has shared so many memories along life's journey is now gone, and only Allah SWT knows how heavy the heart is to accept this fact," Anwar wrote.
He added that while he regretted not being able to be by his brother's side during his final moments, he was at peace, even if his heart is still trying to accept a separation that they were never prepared to face.
"Thank you for all the memories and kindness that you left and all will remain etched in our memories and hearts," Anwar said.
Anwar concluded his three-day visit to China on Thursday after holding a bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Anwar said Malaysia-China relations have grown beyond ordinary diplomatic ties into a friendship built on trust and confidence.
He added that Malaysia places "great importance" on this relationship, and in Chinese President Xi Jinping's leadership in development, governance, and the pursuit of shared prosperity.
