Thomas Ong fractures leg during 45-day Japan trip: 'But I don't have any regrets'

PUBLISHED ONBYYeo Shu HuiThomas Ong's Japan trip was cut short by an accident on Oct 25.
The 57-year-old local actor shared in a Facebook post on Nov 1: "Sometimes, the timing of an incident is even more astonishing than the actual event."
The photo accompanying his post shows him at an airport, sitting on a wheelchair with his right ankle bandaged and holding on to his clutches.
He had initially planned a 45-day trip in Japan, which only lasted over 10 days because of his injury.
Thomas, who did not reveal how it occurred, wrote: "The doctor gave me two options. One was surgery to place a metal plate in the fractured bone, and I could start moving more freely after about two weeks.
"The other option was to skip surgery but plaster [my leg] and let the bone heal on its own. No matter which, the doctor said it would take about six weeks of recovery time."
When he heard it, he immediately did the math, as he was supposed to serve as a tour guide for a trip to Europe on Dec 7.
"It just happened to be in six weeks. In that moment, I didn't feel I am unlucky. Instead, I felt an indescribable kind of gratitude, because if this accident had happened two weeks later, I might not have been able to go on that Europe trip," Thomas shared.
According to LGE Travel, he would be guiding a tour group on a 13-day-10-night trip on board the Viking River Cruise to various cities in Europe.
Thomas wrote in his post that while he wasn't able to complete his Japan trip, he has seen many beautiful scenery and ate a lot of delicious food.
He added: "The mountains, waterfalls, hot springs and the local delicacies that I will never forget all became great memories of this trip. Although the journey has been put on hold, I don't have any regrets.
"It's okay that I didn't complete the 45-day adventure. The good memories I have now won't be erased just because something unpleasant happened... The souvenir I brought back from Japan this time is two crutches."
Thomas ended his post by sharing he chose not to undergo surgery or put his leg in a cast and would be resting at home during this time to let his bone heal naturally.
