Hong Kong hits record temperature of 36.9 deg C, highest since 1884

Hong Kong recorded its highest temperature recorded of 36.9 deg C at 3.30pm on Sunday (Aug 9), the highest since 1884 when records began, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The observatory said the heat is a result of subsiding air in the periphery of Typhoon Dolphin.

It also issued a "very hot weather warning" advisory — for a second consecutive day — at 6.45am on Monday, reminding residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activities.

Across Hong Kong, the Home Affairs Department opened up 19 community halls and centres as temporary heat shelters.

These facilities will remain open for people to take refuge from the heat when the "very hot weather warning" is in force.

At night, it will also provide beds and a place to sleep for those in need.

Temperatures are expected to remain high till Wednesday or Thursday, with some areas expecting the mercury to top 37 deg C.
